Darts Veteran Bobby George Extends Winmau Partnership

In a move that reinforces his longstanding ties to the sport, darts legend Bobby George has renewed his contract with equipment manufacturer Winmau. The partnership, which has spanned an impressive 48 years, will continue for at least three more, showcasing the mutual respect and commitment between the two parties.

Winmau’s marketing director, Simon Hall, expressed his delight at George’s contract extension, stating, “Bobby has done so much for the sport through his playing days and role within the media. He understands what this company is all about, and I’m happy he is staying with us for more years to come.”

Known as the “King of Bling,” Bobby George is widely regarded as a pioneering figure in the world of darts. He was the first player to introduce the concept of walk-on music, revolutionizing the pre-match atmosphere in 1994. George also coined several famous phrases that have become ingrained in the sport’s lexicon, such as the iconic “Scoring for show, doubles for dough.”

“I was the first player to include walk-on music, in 1994 I was speaking with a cameraman, and he agreed that I should have my own signature walk-on music to keep the atmosphere going. They just walked on with their national flags and no music, which led me to ask the BBC if I could do it. The BBC asked Olly Croft and he agreed. I never picked my first music; Martin Fitzmaurice the MC chose the song, and it started with the revving up of a motorbike, before I walked on the stage to: Do You Wanna Be In My Gang by Gary Glitter. The game changed with this concept; I was the first to wear sequinned shirts as well as the nice jewellery. I feel like I’ve made a difference in the game, along with all my sayings.”

The continued partnership between Bobby George and Winmau underscores the darts legend’s enduring influence and the brand’s commitment to preserving the sport’s rich history and traditions.
